Tonight a few of us holed up in Kona and watched movies. One of them was Cashback, the first feature from Sean Ellis, based on his short of the same name. The cast from the short reprised their roles. Ben, the protagonist narrates the story about an artist in university who reacts to his insomnia by working the night shift at Sainsbury’s, the characters he meets there and the events that follow. It’s also a story about love, loss, pranks, acceptance, introspection and plain being young. And freezing time. And lots of very naked women. In conclusion: awesome, one of the best films I’ve seen in a while.
Think Michel Gondry, Danny Boyle and Edgar Wright figuring out how to collaborate with no budget, Sean Ellis is solidly ticking off both boxes on his to do list. The Brøken, a horror film starring Lena Headey from 300 is his current project.

Watching a couple episodes of 24 followed by The Lost Boys is just weird.

Films about a fascist Britain are nothing new. However, where V for Vendetta was a bludgeon, Children of Men is a scalpel. It is an extremely violent film, the acts coming with neither warning nor celebration; a bleak comment on race relations, globalization, media, surveillance and xenophobia. In contrast with the film’s gray palette, every scene is saturated with detail: photographs, signs, advertisements, sideband messages reminiscent of the Bolex Brothers’ Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb or Graeme Base’s earlier children’s books. Like the latter, filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón makes clear his contempt for the current war in Iraq, the hypocrisy of western drug policy and immigration law. Children of Men is not only the best film made in 2006, it is probably the best near future science fiction film made in the past 30 years.
